A manufacturer of 10, 11 and 13 Liter Diesel Engines needed to automate material handling and removal processes to achieve higher quality and productivity over previous manual processes that were inconsistent and slowing down production. The manufacturer needed a robotic system that could operate in a harsh environment; automate material handling for three crankshaft designs; and that features simple programming and maintenance while still improving process speed and product quality. The system included two servo trunnion workstations with custom tooling for compatibility. There were manual loading and unloading stations for part quality checks. The whole automation system featured turnkey programming for all three models of crankshaft and integrated connectivity for remote support by the Genesis Service Department.

In the early 90s Detroit Diesel Corporation DDC wanted to reinvent their previously successful engine controller, DDEC II, to cope with the increasing demands of more stringent emissions requirements and the increasingly diverse applications resulting from the continuing success of their flagship Series 60 engine. The functions available in the DDEC III system included engine diagnostic messages, fault history record keeping, shutdown timers, progressive shift functions, speed limiting, automatic stall prevention and cruise control functions; most notably the DDEC system provided for an industry-first engine management report, that would record the use of the engine and be able to provide records of trucks over-speeding, excessive idle time, hard braking and other parameters that would assist operators to increase productivity, reduce engine wear and decrease fuel consumption. For several years after the product launch, Pi Innovo maintained the ECU software directly, before transferring knowledge and responsibility to the newly formed DDC software team.
