Definition Of Satire Humor
Satire in Vanity Fair
Largely because of Candide, Voltaire ranks with Jonathan Swift as one of the greatest satirists in literature. Satire may be defined as the particular literary way of making possible the improvement of humanity and its institutions. The satirist adopts a critical attitude and usually presents his material with wit and humor. Aware of grave limitations in the institutions which humanity has erected, he may seek through laughter to effect a remodeling rather than the demolishing of them.
Satire is a literary device for the artful ridicule of a folly or vice as a means of exposing or correcting it. Satire utilizes tones of amusement, contempt, scorn, or indignation towards a flawed subject with the hope of creating awareness and subsequent change. For example, one of the most well-known satirical literary works is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This includes religion, monogamy, social equality, and the blessing of childbirth.
Satire is a genre of the visual , literary , and performing arts , usually in the form of fiction and less frequently non-fiction , in which vices, follies, abuses and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement. A feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm —"in satire, irony is militant", according to literary critic Northrup Frye — but parody , burlesque , exaggeration , juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. This "militant" irony or sarcasm often professes to approve of or at least accept as natural the very things the satirist wishes to question. Satire is found in many artistic forms of expression, including internet memes, literature, plays, commentary, music , film and television shows, and media such as lyrics.
