Anyone can succeed through hard work and persistence. That was the original American Dream, and that notion has somewhat been at the heart of American culture through history. However, composers F. Mendes shows that it brings about superficiality and an unrealistic expectation of self. Both texts are set in their current times, and directly criticise their cultures by playing out a story where disastrous consequences occur to those subscribing to the ethos of the current culture.

The shot is dark, the only light coming from a blue streetlight on the right of the car and the only diegetic sound is that of the heavy rainfall on the windscreen. A non-diegetic soundtrack of low orchestral music begins, almost blending in with that of the rain. It begins out of focus before slowly focusing to reveal a long shot of their red front door. The non-diegetic soundtrack then changes to the leitmotif used throughout the film, suggesting a connection to Lester and grounding this shot within the narrative of the overall film. She is shown in a medium shot, the lighting dim, emphasising the stark white clinical tiles behind her. She is wrapped in a blanket which, earlier, the audience see Lester wrap around her and she has a plate of food and a bottle of Coca Cola in front of her, the label visible. These emphasise her youth and innocence as she is being taken care of, a far cry from the self-assured and confident woman she appeared to be at the start of the film.

He has little to no power at home, he is rather close to losing his job, in short he is reaching a mid life crisis. Everything changes when he meets Angela Hayes, a close friend of his teenage daughter, who he begins to develop a sexual attraction for.

One of the opening scenes of the movie starts with a view of Lester Burnham, his attractive, blonde wife Carolyn Burnham and their daughter Janie and what seems to be what seems to be the Burnhams picture perfect life and picture perfect marriage. The suburban house with the clean cut lawn and perfect garden, white picket fence, the oak trees lining the street, the two cars parked in the driveway.
