The burden of antimicrobial resistance: the case of escherichia coli. Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance is considered a potential threat to global population health. National and international surveillance reports highlight the epidemiological burden of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli, with particular reference to urinary tract infections UTIs and bacteraemia. Evidence on the health and cost burden of such infections in England is unknown; such evidence is needed to evaluate policies targeting antibiotic resistance and Gram-negative infections.

Antibiotic resistance leads to infections that are increasingly difficult to treat. Resistance can be partially curbed through responsible antibiotic use. In this thesis reponsible antibiotic use was explored by consulting different stakeholders: antibiotic prescribers, patients, public health organisations, manufacturers and regulators. These results contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the complexity of using antibiotics responsibly and are embedded in a context of increasing awareness of the societal implications of ABR and of the need for multi-sectoral actions to address the issue. The PhD thesis is accessible here. About the author: Annelie A. Her research focuses on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

Categories: opportunities. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing medical challenge, hampering the effectiveness of existing drugs and threatening the lives of patients. Therefore, there is a pressing need for novel compounds including compounds that re-sensitise drug-resistant bacteria to existing antimicrobials. The project is a collaboration between 10 academia and industry partners in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and UK, and it will guide early stage researchers to use innovative approaches to achieve their scientific goals.
