There are numerous incidences of impoverishment and livelihood change in pastoral societies following transformations in land use, and land and livestock ownership. Opinion is divided over the effect of these changes on women. This paper considers the case of the former residents of the Mkomazi Game Reserve. Pastoralists were evicted from the Reserve in the late s and their livelihoods have changed as a result.

When I was little, I loved going to the park, and I loved riding my tricycle. The giggles escaped from my small frail body, and I am at home. The park is my home. Around the corner from my small, worn down house was the small park with the rusty chains, and the chilled metal slide. On one side laid a lonely park bench, and on the other, there were blackberry bushes which made a thick wall like a castle.
