How to Write a Profile Feature Article
When you think of newspapers , you probably tend to focus on the hard-news stories that fill the front page. But much of the writing found in any newspaper is done in a much more feature-oriented way. Writing ledes for feature stories , as opposed to hard-news ledes, requires a different approach. Hard-news ledes need to get all the important points of the story — the who, what, where, when, why, and how — into the first sentence or two, so that if the reader only wants the basic facts, he or she gets them quickly. The more of a news story he or she reads, the more detail he gets.
Tips on Writing a Good Feature Article
Read time: 2 mins. Ever felt the impulse to write a feature article — or been required to as part of a job— but not known where to start? Step 3: Work out a practical plan of action. This should include where to go, who to speak to, and your research and preparation for the actual writing stage. In this short video, Andre Wiesner, Head Tutor of the UCT Feature Journalism online short course , takes you through this process in more detail: from the inception of initial ideas and the preparation required before writing, to sending your finished piece off to an editor.
Have had periodic jobs writing profiles for various publications but never actually took a journalism course and was always anxious about technique. Just found this while googling and it was really helpful - will refer to it again before next assignment. Many thanks! I'm a freelance writer looking for journalism courses, but I found your site and ended up getting so much more. I really appreciate your "tutorials" for creating a blog, in-depth interviewing techniques, etc.
